Terminal Knee Extension — Seated

Terminal knee extension performed seated strengthens the quadriceps and promotes proper medial tracking of the patellae. Improper tracking of the patella may increase patellofemoral contact pressures that may lead to patellar cartilage degeneration.


  • Seated down, lean back with one leg straight but propped up slightly at the knee over a large rolled-up towel.
  • Pull the foot of the stretched-out leg back as far as you can, and extend your knee straight.
  • “Squeeze” your thighs.
  • Return to the relaxed position.
